Discussion using Lightroom to capture and assemble a panoramic photo.

Discussion of Macro photos for next month's category

  • Extension tubes can be a great option to adapt a non-macro lens for macro photography. I recommend getting a set that passes the electronics through to the lens so you have all control while you are taking a photo. Canon lenses, for instance, have no other way to set aperture.
  • Try experimenting with taking several shots of your subject, with different focus areas throughout each photo. You can then assemble the photos together into a single image using Photoshop Focus Stacking. There are many tutorials about this online. Look at this video for a quick explanation of the concept.  How To Do Focus Stacking in Photoshop

Tonight I will cover Black and White conversion using Lightroom.  Also cover an interesting way to calculate Bulb mode.

As far as the Black and White conversion in Lightroom, I reviewed the information in several online articles, and added in some of my own experience. I would recommend looking at the many articles published by Andres S. Gibson on Digital Photography School as a start.  This article had some of the screen shots we used, but was for a

Intermediate / Advanced Photography

Grand Theatre Center for the Arts #12459

Thurs 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10 -- 6 – 8 pm

Ages: 15 – Adult Residents $65 Non-Residents $71

The April "Intermediate/Advanced" class is a mixed offering, due to the March Intermediate class being cancelled due to instructor illness. It is intended for someone who has gone beyond basic understanding, who wants to seriously build on that background and experience, going deeper into photography and camera understanding. We dig further into the exposure controls and how to apply them. We explore further the other camera and photographic concepts and aspects. Again, there is emailed materials/homework, as well as in-class discussions and hands-on time. This class picks up where we left off with the Beginning Photography. We will continue to explore further how the individual and combined/interactive effects of exposure controls affect the image outcome – f/stops, shutter speeds, ISO settings, shooting modes. We spend time understanding "aesthetic" compositional aspects framing an effective impression. Specific problem areas and issues will receive in-depth attention. (Either prior participation in a Beginning classes, or approval from the instructor, is a prerequisite. Please contact directly with questions.)

Saturday Morning Photo Studio: Lighting 2

Grand Theatre Center for the Arts #12461

Sat 4/14 10 am – 2 pm room: Visual Arts 2 (upstairs)

Ages: 15 – Adult Residents $40 Non-Residents $44

Session 2 – "Lighting 2": We will be taking what we can be aware of with “found” lighting, from January's "Lighting 1" offering, and further explore ways to adjust and augment it to fit our camera work in the moment. We will explore and apply what I call “spontaneous improvisation” in understanding just how we can read the lighting and seek out ways to work with it, with either no additional equipment, or with a minimal application of "extra camera stuff" like a light-bouncing reflector or a light-blocking scrim. Students of any experience level can benefit from the session. (Please contact directly with questions.)

Website and social

Finances

  • Adrianne for follow up

Competition

  • Steve Greiner is our judge tonight
  • We have 74 entries for the competition
  • Helen Watson won print of the month with her photo titled Concentration. Congratulations, Helen!

TCC End of the Year and final monthly competition

posted Oct 20, 2015, 5:18 PM by Geoff Faulkner

Hi shutterbugs,
We had some nice images last month and a judge all the way from Bakersfield. It turns out that Herb Spencer has a project that he is working on of photos from Highway 33 that goes from Bakersfield to the Banta Inn where he has a great love of the hamburgers, so his trip had two purposes. Aaron and Cash tied for Print of the Month. Hopefully both will appear in The Tracy Press.
We have to change the date of our next meeting so mark your calendar. It turns out that Wednesday November 11th is Veterans Day and the Grand is closed. We will meet the day before, Tuesday November 10 at the usual time and place. It is the last competition of the year so a couple of new rules will be featured. First, all of the rotating categories are open; Nature, Travel and Journalism. In addition, you may enter one "oldie but goodie" from previous years.
In December we will have our End of Year Competition where you can enter your best 2015 photos again. Competition Chair Rebekah will pick an all star cast of several judges to pick the the best of several categories. The winners will be announced at our year end party in January.
See you next month (on Tuesday).   Mickey McGuire

August meeting - Saturday in the park

posted Jul 31, 2015, 4:10 PM by Geoff Faulkner   [ updated Jul 31, 2015, 4:11 PM ]

TCC'rs,

Wednesday August 12 at 7:00 pm at the Grand is our next meeting. The theme is "Panorama" and the rotating category is "Journalism". Tomorrow a contingent of the TCC will be at Lincoln Park along with lots of other artists between 10:00 and 2:00. You could stop by and help at the table or just come by and say hello.

Richard Beebe has several classes offered this next semester. Among them are Beginning Digital Photography, Intermediate, and Advanced, and several offerings on different dates of Photo Studio Drop-In. If you are like me, you have probably heard from many friends about wanting to learn how to operate their new cameras. Here's how! The first class starts in October.

We have one more Art Walk at the Grand scheduled for Friday August 14. If you have any images that you would like to have displayed, bring them to the next meeting. Make sure you put your name on the back.

A recent edition of Imaging Resource has an extended discussion of yet another new type of camera. It's just a lens and sensor with a remote connection to your smart phone. Much of the electronics is an ap on your phone and the view screen is your phone. There is even a bracket so you can combine the two. It seems ideal for wildlife photography or street photography.

I owe a real debt of gratitude to Cash, Tiffany, Richard and others that have stepped up to cover the Saturday and Friday events since I'm going to miss both of the next two. But I will see you August 12 for the meeting. In the mean time, see if you can figure out how your camera makes panoramas. Mickey McGuire
